Written and directed by Woody Allen, “To Rome with Love” (2012) is a charming romantic comedy set in Rome, Italy starring Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October, 30 Rock, The Departed), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful), Penélope Cruz (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Allen himself (Manhattan, Midnight in Paris).
The story of the film is told in four separate vignettes:
- A clerk (Benigni) wakes up to find himself a celebrity
- An architect (Baldwin) who takes a trip back to the street he lived on as a student
- A young couple on their honeymoon
- An Italian funeral director whose uncanny singing ability enraptures his soon to be in-law, an American opera director.
As with any Woody Allen film, the story line always seems to have a bit of mystery about it, and this film is no different. If you have had a hard day’s work and just want to watch something pretty simple then this film works well on that level, however dig under the surface of some of the story lines and much deeper meanings can be taken (avoiding spoilers here!), but it could be argued that one of the characters may or may not be actually a real person within the story line etc. See if you can spot it yourself.
In the best possible way, what you see is not always what you get with a Woody Allen film, and “To Rome with Love” is no different. It’s simple, complex, sad, funny and a little weird all wrapped into one. Or put another way, classic Woody Allen. A must see!
